i live in the forest of dean which has a decent population of fallow/roe/and muntjac deer. for the red deer i travel to scotland. the settings i would normally use to get the images with the full frame 1dx and 400mm prime are shutter priority mode , 1/1000 auto iso, exposure as needed the above altered as needed , with the 1dx i record to both cards ie jpeg and raw . i never shoot video with the 1dx , also i will shoot in manual but never av or p mode . when using the canon 90d i use the above settings but do need better light with it being a crop sensor camera . all video work is shot on the 90d in tv mode which is easier for me in the field, i will use a calumet loope view on the 90d esp for video as i am then filming in live view with eyepiece on the loope view this gives cracking results .when going out looking for deer i tend to shoot early morning/ late evening. also i find it harder to get them from june to september in the forest as the ferns are up to 7ft high so they are well hidden. as far as spotting the deer goes i have a few well covered areas i use very near to where they make there usual walking tracks which are also used by wild boar [ i will get to those in another post ] all post processing is done on mostly photoshop. most of the above info apply's to mostly the fallow deer, the roe deer is similar but they are more solitary deer but the above does apply in fact i prefer the roe as they are more native to the uk than fallow deer . i will put more info up as i go and videos , and please remember i carry out a full tutorial course for wildlife photography . thank you for visiting the site
